If you’re like me, you drink a LOT of plant milk! It’s just so tasty, and knowing it’s good for me makes me want to drink more, and a 1 litre carton might only last a few days (or less!) So I was enticed into looking at making my own from home, but it needed to be quick, so I could make it on the go, and cut down any long or overnight soaking prep. Here’s the solution, and I made a video of how easy it is…
Hemp milk is one of my favourites, because it tastes good, and has loads of nutrition! There’s protein (all 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential aminos that our body can’t produce on its own), calcium, minerals (including zinc, iron, potassium), phytonutrients, GLA, chlorophyll… but the winner is the essential omega fatty acids! Hemp contains Omega 3, 6 and 9, with the perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega 3 & 6 ! Many people ask about where to get a good dose of Omega 3’s when they give up fish – but hemp has the answer. A 30 gram serving provides 100% of your RDA, so it’s super easy to get this by adding a little scoop to smoothies, breakfasts, meals, or homemade milk…
I’ve included more awesome benefits and info below, but first, here’s how to make it!
WHAT YOU NEED – ingredients
Along with your blender you just need:
- 30g organic hemp seed hearts (dehulled / deshelled) Buy here
- 1 litre filtered water
- sweetener if required (e.g. organic dates, maple syrup, agave, or Buy low calorie, low GI prebiotic organic raw Yacon powder here)
HOW TO MAKE
- Set your blender to the highest setting, or use the ‘soup’ setting on some brands like Vitamix. Add your seeds and water, and blend until smooth and frothy (10-30 seconds).
- You’re done – taste and enjoy!
- OPTIONAL: to get the best nutrition, you should enjoy your milk unstrained. BUT if you prefer you can strain the pulp ‘bits’ from the hemp milk with a cheesecloth or nut milk bag.
- Refrigerate. Hemp milk can last up to a week. It will naturally separate in the fridge, due to not containing any of the added stabilisers or preservatives of many store bought milks – so just give it a little stir each time you serve it, and you’ll be getting 100% of the goodness.

SUGAR & SWEET
As shown in the video you can chuck in a couple of organic dates to bring out the gorgeous natural flavour – or if you’re really looking for a treat add your favourite sweetener like maple syrup or agave, and even raw cacao for a chocolate milkshake ! Or a scoop of your favourite vegan protein powder for a tasty flavoured protein boost! Or a handful of strawberries, or some bananas, or… you get the idea! 😀
Another huge advantage to making your own from the hemp heart seeds is that buying the ready-made cartons can become quite expensive. Plant milks at the supermarket, whilst very tasty and convenient, can be anything from a £1.50 to £3.50 a litre. But a 500g bag of premium organic hemp seeds for £9.99 can make over 30+ litres of milk- saving you anywhere from £50 to £100+ a month compared to buying the cartons. So there’s a money-saving aspect to making your own, and is actually pretty convenient once you know how (and eco-friendly saving on packaging and endless throwaway cartons!), to be able to make a fresh batch from the blender whenever you like, rather than having to go out shopping to stock up!
And while there’s the health & nutritional benefits along with saving money, my favourite reason for choosing plant milks has to be the animals! All the baby cows who get to stay with their mums, and not supporting a cruel and unnecessary dairy industry that quite literally milks the cow til it dies. Dairy milk aka ‘bovine growth fluid’ is not intended for humans, and its only purpose according to Dr. Klaper is “to turn a 65 pound calf into a 400 cow as rapidly as possible”. This explains the myriad health complications that arise from consumption from dairy (milk, cheese, butter), including weight gain, acne, cramps, gut stomach & digestion issues, and diseases of all kinds- all of which have been found to be dramatically reduced when switching from dairy to plantbased alternatives.
HEMP IS NOT WEED!
Finally, just to put those minds at rest who had concerns – hemp is NOT marijuana ! Whilst it comes from the same Cannabis Sativa plant it does not contain any of the psychoactive properties found in the drug. The hemp used widely and commercially is a legal, safe and wonderfully versatile plant, with uses and applications in many industries and sectors, from:
- Hemp Seeds for milk, confectionery, beer, flour, baking…
- Hemp Oil for cooking oils, ointments, tonics, cosmetics, skin & body care…
- Hemp Fabric used to make all sorts of things from fabric, textiles, clothing, carpeting, insulation, etc.
